Customer Reviews

Worth it for these songs

I bought this CD direct from Jackie's website (it came autographed personally to me with a 20-page booklet filled with great pics!). I bought it after reading this great review by Christopher Loudon in my favorite magazine, JazzTimes. Here's just a part of it -- the capital letters are mine (she's also got my favorite band with her, the Grammy Award winning John Clayton and his son Gerald):
"JACKIE RYAN JOINED THE UPPER ECHELON OF CONTEMPORARY JAZZ VOCALISTS A HALF-DOZEN YEARS AGO. . . EVINCING AN EFFORTLESSNESS AKIN TO ELLA'S OR SARAH'S. . . NOW, WITH THE FLAWLESS 'LISTEN HERE', RYAN AGAIN SURPASSES HERSELF. AS ALWAYS, HER TONE, PHRASING, AND INTERPRETIVE SMARTS ARE IMPECCABLE AND HER RANGE - SUBLIME, but there is a fresh earthiness evident across these 14 tracks, an even richer naturalness. . . traveling from the brass-lined fervor of her opening 'Comin' Home Baby' and the testifying strut of 'Accentuate The Positive' to the warm breeziness of 'Anytime, Any Day, Anywhere' and the hushed beauty of the Dave Frishberg title track. Along the way, she delivers an enchanted reading of Abbey Lincoln's 'Throw It Away,' revisits the Mexican half of her heritage with the heartrending 'La Puerta,' and rivals the majesty of Nina Simone on a towering "I Loves You, Porgy.'"

This CD has been number one on Jazz Chart for four weeks. If that doesn't say it all, nothing does. There are not enough superlatives to describe Jackie's singing; just wonderful, it is.

Not too many American jazz vocalists also sing in Spanish and Portuguese. Jackie's heritage really shines in "La Puerta," just a sweet, romantic ballad about a lost love. Her phrasing and technique on some of the old standards and lesser-heard tunes is extraordinary.

Jackie's vocal range is astounding. Few pop singers can duplicate this style. With John Clayton's producing skills, her accompanying musicians help put out this class product.
