iTunes Review

Sweet and shimmering, the music of Canadian singer/songwriter Lights (a.k.a. Valerie Poxleitner) goes down easy and leaves a tingling aftertaste. The Listening, her 2009 debut album, has the intimate feel of a bedroom reverie. Lights’ spiritually tinged lyrics return again and again to the theme of divine comfort and aid — songs like “Saviour,” “Drive My Soul” and “Second Go” are upwardly directed expressions set to throbbing, high-gloss tracks. “February Air” and “Quiet” are more explicitly romantic, lending an appealing innocence by Lights’ breathy, waif-like vocals. Throughout, The Listening revels in vintage and modern synthesizer textures, switching between jittery techno-dance tunes (“Ice,”“River”) and atmospheric (though still beat-driven) soundscapes (“Face Up,” the title song). Whether she’s confronting her fears in “Lions!” or yearning for lost childhood in “Pretend,” Lights wraps her gossamer sonic threads around serious topics. Though her touch is frequently soft, she’s capable of flashes of intensity, as “The Last Thing On Youe Mind” shows.

A Fan of Owl City Will Scream For Joy

No, I don't mean those little tweens that only like Fireflies, I mean those real, deep Owl City fans will enjoy this. Personally, I love The Listening, Ice, and The Last Thing On Your Mind the most, The Listening being the best, but all of them are pretty good. A Paramore fan might enjoy this as well...this woman's got the best of many worlds...including talent, depth, and interesting covers. :) But, seriously, this is a gorgeous, well-porportioned album with amazing depth and the appearance is just fabulous. Keep up the good work, Lights!

Ok, first off, LIGHTS IS AMAZING. Everything she does it completely and utterly perfect. This album couldn’t epitomize her any better :] Track by track review: 1. Saviour - 15/10 - This song is so inspiring and uplifting, and it is a great typical Lights song. She wrote it in one of her darkest moments and turned it into something positive. MUST BUY. 2. Drive My Soul - 20000/10 - This is literally one of the best songs of all time. This is the song that has repeated on my iPod so many times I can’t even count. It’s so beautiful and heart felt. MUST BUY. 3. River - 10/10 - This song is great!! It’s so free and exhilarating. It kind of sounds like a song that would be playing at the end of a movie, like after the main character learns his/her lesson and becomes a better person, and then everything turns out ok. 4. The Listening - 15/10 - This song is more synthesized and electronic sounding, but it is definitely one of the best. The lyrics are so true and relatable. I love the effects on this one. MUST BUY. 5. Ice - 9.9/10 - This song definitely grew on me. It’s a happy, upbeat song that’ll make you smile. I really love the music video for this song too. 6. Pretend - 20000/10 - This may be my new favorite Lights song. It’s so deep and introspective. I really almost cried while listening to it. MUST BUY. 7. The Last Thing on Your Mind - 10/10 - This is the song that got me hooked on Lights when it was played on those Old Navy commercials way back when. It’s so cute and bubbly. 8. Second Go - 9.5/10 - This song is more mainstream pop than we’re used to hearing, but of course it has that usual Lights magic that just makes you smile and feel all apple pie happy :] 9. February Air - 20000/10 - Another song I almost cried to. This was written on Valetine’s Day and it just evokes that emotion of cold air and raw emotion. The lyrics and melody are chilling. The hook is most spectacular. MUST BUY. 10. Face Up - 10/10 - This is such a nice, uplifting song. The lyrics are so relatable and it’s one of those songs you know came from a bad experience. Again, it just makes you smile. This sounds like it would make a really good single. 11. Lions! - 10/10 - I love the lyrics to this song, they are some of her best. (They hint strongly to World of Warcraft) It just sounds like a kids’ song, but when you look deeper, it truly means something. The message is great. AHH I LOVE LIGHTS. Haha had to add that. I’m listening to this song right now and it just made me really happy. 12. Quiet - 10/10 - This song is cute and quirky. The lyrics make you feel so warm and fuzzy. I also love the message of this song. It’s wanting to just be quiet and in synch with someone special. 13. Pretend (Reprise) - 20000/10 - This stripped-down version of the song is so so so so so amazingly beautiful. Maybe it’s even better than the original. Hearing Lights without anything but just her voice and a piano is sublime. It’s so simple, and the lyrics add to that theme of simplicity, while also having that underlining meaning that’s so deep. This song is about life and growing up and wanting to be innocent. The message is really great. MUST BUY. 14. Saviour (Colin Munroe’s Unsung Mix) - 9/10 - Of course, the original is better, but this is a really good remix. I like how they added to the song instead of just speeding it up. This does not disappoint. 15. Saviour (The Angry Kids FM Mix) - 9.1/10 - This, in my opinion, is a better remix just because it’s more danceable and upbeat. It’s nice and electronic, and it gets stuck in your head easily. I like how it includes the background voices/echoes in all the choruses. So, in all, this album is AMAZING. No joke, this is one of the best things that I have heard in the longest time. It’s uplifting, deep, emotional, and it really has a great theme. I have never loved an artist like I’ve loved Lights.

This Album will sink under your skin.

I've been awaiting this album eagerly for months! Lights has a voice that shoots to your soul, her melodies are engaging and uplifting, her lyrics take you on a journey. She has this way, of making songs that may have a sad or bittersweet base, but they make you feel happy. Some of my favorites are The Listening, River, Pretend and Lions, but every song is uniquely wonderful. You will not regret this purchase.

Lights first cracked the Canadian charts in May 2008, when the debut single "Drive My Soul" introduced her synthesis of youthful, sellable alt-rock and contemporary synth pop.
