if you like Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith...

... or Morrissey, Paul Simon, Damien Rice or Devendra Banhart... then you'll love this album! It was seriously just about my favorite album of 2005 -- and I write about music for a living, so I hear a LOT of albums. Holcombe has a truly magical voice -- the kind that turns heads. His singing is very emotional and his lyrics here are simultaneously personal and political and extremely intelligent. Fans of intricate lyrics that make you think and feel things you may not have before -- or find words for feelings and thoughts you've never voiced -- will find much to cherish and ponder here. The melodies are beautiful, and the production is a cool blend of hi- and lo-fi. Highlights are the moving title track, the absolutely gorgeous 7/8 Song, No Enemy a poppy protest song about Condoleeza Rice(!), and the truly wise (and definitely parental advisory worthy) lyrics and heartbreaking melody of Without It, but every single track has something to recommend it, either lyrically, vocally, melodically, or instrumentally -- most often all of the above simultaneously. Little Wrecking Ball is kind of obliquely about Jeff Buckley. Take Me WIth You would feel right at home on a Yo La Tengo album. Alt-something artist Mia Doi Todd sings on the closing track, though its lyrics in full are just the title repeated twice, slowly. If you're a fan of smart singer-songwriters, try this album, you won't be disappointed!
