Most classic rock fans should be pretty familiar with the tunes featured here on this album of covers, but new fans are in for some surprises. The alt-metal band takes a scaled back approach here, preferring to remain true to the songs’ original style and intent rather than goosing them up with a metal overlay. So, the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” keeps its original anthem power. Neil Young’s “Old Man” is given just a jolt of electricity. AC/DC’s “T.N.T.” only adds a vague hard-rock boogie to the power-chord madness. Led Zeppelin’s reggae “D’yer Mak’er” is done with authority. Billy Squier’s “Everybody Wants You” is reborn with extra sass in the vocal. Singer Wesley Scantlin handles himself well. He can be Steve Miller for “The Joker” or Paul Rodgers of Free for “All Right Now.” The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” is done like the Joe Cocker version. J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” is given a hard-rock treatment a few steps heavier than the infamous Eric Clapton cover.
