iTunes Review

Three-fifths of Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet—pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams, augmented here by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor saxophonist George Coleman—continue their experiments in telepathic mind meld on this oceanic gem from 1966. The sailing is smooth, with one memorable solo after another flowing seamlessly into superb future standards, like Hancock's title track and "Dolphin Dance." Cool spaciousness prevails, at least until the shipwreck resulting in "Survival of the Fittest."

Among the greatest Jazz ever recorded

Herbie and his amazing band go into a modal theme that is timelessly brilliant and would be in my desert island survival list. THIS is the power of Jazz to enchant, to entertain and to heal one's soul. Essentail+

A Desert-island Album

This album is perfect at first listen, and keeps getting better every time you listen to it. The harmonies of Hancock are tearfully beautiful, the lineup is superb – they left a piece of their soul in every note. If I could only have one jazz album, this would be the one, and it belongs in every music-lovers library. A classic among classics.

great but...ummm

how come I have to buy the whole album for dolphin dance? get over yourself, professor.

Though grounded in Bill Evans and able to absorb blues, funk, gospel,...
