The Four Freshmen Live at Butler University

A very good collaboration between a vocal group and a jazz orchestra. JJ

Live At Butler U

Disagree with J----. Kenton and the Freshmen sound similar (harmony and arrangements) by their own admission. So they are a perfect blend on the collaboration of songs. Sure Kenton is a powerful band but what band isn't that is made up of 20 or so musicians? I'm a big band fan and a chord freak. I want to hear those chords and the arrangements. Tunes I can whistle, but I can't sing or whistle chords. Anyone who is moved and hears chords will appreciate the full spectrum of the blending of Kenton and the Freshmen.

The best of both

I college at SMU, I played Kenton arrangements under the capable direction of Ronny Modell, who later made Northern Illinois a jazz mecca. The intricacies of harmony and rhythm are challenging, but playing and performing such charts raise your appreciation of the musicianship necessary. On this album, Kenton's orchestra reinforces its reputation. BUT, the Freshmen demonstrate the ability of the human voice and harmonics to create a sound that transcends instrumental music. Considering that this was a live concert, the mix is amazing.
