iTunes Editors’ Notes

Over the past few decades, Chris Isaak has amassed a sizable catalog of songs that sound like Roy Orbison has been resurrected and found his way into the new century with his sound intact. How else to explain the wonderful vocal swings of “Somebody’s Crying”? Or the rockabilly shuffle of “Want Your Love”? Issak is all for retro turns as long as he can modernize them with extra electricity. He records in higher tech studios but never lets the technology push him around. This live collection from the legendary San Francisco Fillmore club is the perfect venue for Isaak to run through “Wicked Game,” “San Francisco Days” and “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” along with a few unreleased tunes. It’s an emotively pure collection backed by his stellar live band. “Worked It Out Wrong” strips it down to piano and vocals and the cries of the captivated crowd. “Move Along” shuffles back with a laid-back rhythm that is never down for the count. Bonus cuts such as “Lonely Man” and “Goin’ Nowhere” turn up the speed and energy and make for the perfect encore for a perfect night.

The Circus Is In Town

I was there at the fillmore! It still doesnt capture the essence of Isaak and Co.'s live show; but then again, I dont think ANY recording or taping can. You just gotta go see this man sing and his men work the stage at least once in your lifetime. They are that good. Nonetheless, you get live recordings of his most popular songs with this cd. For this fanatic, a recording of old country covers from Hank, Haggard, Robbins etc would be Awesome. He sings them impromptu from time to time and does such a lovely job (his brother can clue him in here as he opened for him in SF). There is a snippet of "Farther Along" where Isaak claimed he wanted to sing cause it contained a certain verb he favors...a nice surprise. So label are you listening?!?!

Songwriter Chris Isaak clearly loves the reverb-laden rockabilly and country of Sun Studios. In particular, he transfers the sweeping melancholy of Roy Orbison's classic Monument singles ("Crying," "Oh, Pretty Woman," "In Dreams") to the more stripped-down, rootsy sound of Sun, resulting in a stylized take on '50s and '60s rock &...
