Another Great Release from Brian Chartrand

Brian Chartrand scores again with this album of songs recorded live in front of an enthusiastic capacity crowd at the beautiful MIM Theater in Phoenix in November, 2014. This is the third album that Chartrand has recorded with his band, The Voce Project, following their two studio releases, “The Voce Project” (2011) and “Worth the Fight” (2014).

“Live at the MIM Theater” includes extended cuts of songs from both of the studio albums, and the live versions make a great compliment to the originals. In addition to Chartrand, who plays a pretty mean guitar himself, the band includes Mike Florio on drums, Mario Mendivil on bass, Todd Chuba on percussion, Lamar Gaines on keys and Adam Armijo on lead guitar. These guys are all top drawer professional musicians who could be playing pretty much anywhere they please, and they’ve now been playing together long enough that they interact instinctively, creating a truly great whole out of their individual parts.

The album highlights Chartrand’s talents as both a singer and a songwriter, and standout cuts include “Shelter,” a particularly soulful version of “How Can I,” and a great extended cut of “Summertime Jam,” in which each of the band members gets to strut his stuff.

If I have any complaint about this record, it would lie in the fact that the producers elected not to do this as a double CD and include even more of the music from what was a great concert. One finishes listening to this album hoping that somewhere down the road a “Live at the MIM, Vol. II” might appear, but until then, this will have to suffice as yet another great contribution from a band that simply keeps getting better and better.
