EDITORS’ NOTES

Playing in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown displays finesse and risk-taking grit on Live at Vagabond, the follow-up to their 2014 debut, All Purpose Music. The jazz-informed harmony of keyboardist DJ Harrison and the groove-intensive energy of drummer Corey Fonville are central to the band’s electric-jazz aesthetic. Guitarist Morgan Burr is in full shredding mode out of the gate on “Tomahawk,” while the slower and slinkier “Moses” gives trumpeter Marcus Tenny room to stretch. Bassist Andrew Randazzo takes the spotlight on “Forest 2.0.”
