iTunes Review

The glammy, gender-bending wit of Ziggy Stardust raised David Bowie's American profile, but the swaggering hard rock intensity of his 1972 U.S. tour made him a superstar. Bowie and his Spiders from Mars—freshly expanded with new keyboardist Mike Garson—are scary-tight: the opening "Hang on to Yourself" has the manic energy of punk four years before the Ramones. Earlier, more reflective material like the haunting "Life on Mars" and a dramatic take on Jacques Brel's "My Death" is just as direct and powerful.

Bowie raw and unpolished.

I know I heard this on the radio and recorded onto tape at one time. This was the young Bowie that was doing things to get noticed. His later live music was much more polished. Based on this live recording, I started purchasing his studio records and the studio versions of many of these songs. What is amazing is that you can feel the energy in the music at this time. The tempo was upbeat and fast compared to his later live record. If only I had been older when he performed this live in Santa Monica, CA, that would have been something.

Get it!

If you are a fan of The Man Who Sold the World, this version of The Width of a Circle is worth the price of admission. Raw Bowie and Ronson unmatched anywhere else.

The Memories!!!!

I was thrilled to find this recording because it is the very same concert I saw at the Santa Monica Civic in 1972! Not only that, it was my very first rock concert! Wow! Bowie was my hero from the moment I first heard Starman when I was 16. RIP, David.
