iTunes Editors’ Notes

Recorded before a live audience at Nashville’s Oceanway Studios, All Sons & Daughters’ latest release achieves an intimacy all too rare among worship music albums. Members Leslie Jordan and David Leonard avoid theatrical excess to create a mood closer to that of a storefront church than a concert hall. The duo’s bittersweet, earnest vocals blend effortlessly as they offer tunes rooted in American folk and country traditions. Opening with the penitent’s prayer “Brokenness Aside,” Live slowly builds as it praises the Lord’s majesty (“Hear the Sound”) and offers expressions of spiritual need (“Reason to Sing”). Musically, AS&D veer from galvanizing Mumford and Sons–like numbers (“Oh How I Need You”) to yearning pop hymns (“My God My King”) and sweet acoustic balladry (“Called Me Higher”) while the crowd joins in as the Spirit moves them. “All the Poor and Powerless” is a particularly moving expression of reverence, accented with gospel piano and keening steel guitar. Taken together, the spiritual humility and plainspoken musical grace heard on Live make it a worship project of unusual honesty and power.

A Hardened Heart Is Hard To Break

I'll be honest. For the past several years, I've had a hardened, cynical heart towards the church and especially towards music in (and for) the church, otherwise known as "worship music" (a strange concept on it's own, but that's a topic for another discussion). Long story short, this band, their songs, their heart, this album, has been instrumental in uprooting my cynical weeds and restoring it with a healthy, refreshing hope planted in Christ Jesus alone. Redemption is freedom, and restoration is the hope, and that's what this album is all about. Thank you David, Leslie, and All Sons & Daughters for restoring my faith in this thing we call "worship music", and helping me regain the clarity to see where true hope is found: a God who restores broken people like me. Like you. There's hope. Thank God.

Special

It's no secret - this is the best worship album of 2013. The LP on iTunes is great as it includes chord charts and a few HD videos.

Worship Music For People Who Don't Usually Like Worship Music

I'm a HUGE music fan but, unfortunately, I personally don't relate with a lot of worship music out there. All Sons & Daughters connects with me in a special and unusual way. It's intensely spiritual without any artistic compromise. Good... True... and Beautiful.

Formed in 2009 by Leslie Anne Jordan (guitar, vocals) and David Alan Leonard (piano, vocals) under the moniker Sons & Daughters (later changed to All Sons & Daughters to avoid confusion with the Scottish rock band of the same name), the CCM duo crafts rootsy country-folk in the vein of the Last Bison and the Civil Wars. Worship leaders at the nondenominational Journey Church in Franklin, Tennessee, the pair issued a trio of EPs (Brokenness Aside:...
