Editors’ Notes

Recorded during their 2012-13 tour in support of Sound of the Life and Mind, Live shows Ben Folds Five playing at the peak of their powers. Perhaps the hijinks were greater in the group's younger days, but the poignancy of the performances is clearly the focus here. Even "Erase Me" captures an earnestness behind its shock-value facade. Fan favorites such as "Jackson Cannery," "Brick," and "One Angry Dwarf and Two Hundred Solemn Faces" sound as charged and full of purpose as they did during the band's heyday. Ben Folds easily assumes the role as bandleader. His solo career hasn't been a sea change from his older ways of working, and his camaraderie here with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee sounds natural and unforced. If anything, it's a shame the three of them didn't simply stay together for all these years, as they sound just as natural running through Folds' solo track "Landed" as the old classics "Narcolepsy" or "Song for the Dumped."

Wasn't going to buy it....

The quality of recording as well as the energy from Darren and Robert, as well as the choice of songs soundly make this a quality addition to your BFF collection.
I love being proved wrong......

I was at The Warfield

I was at the show on 1.31.13 at The Warfield in San Francisco, CA, from which many of the recordings for this album come. It was an amazing show. I've no doubt this album will match that descriptor.

Led by the pop-minded prowess of their namesake frontman, Ben Folds Five dispelled any misgivings about a band's ability to rock without guitars. Calling themselves "punk rock for sissies," the Chapel Hill natives were often grouped with the nerd rock movement of the mid-'90s, although their debt to jazz music -- not to mention Ben Folds' acerbic spin on the classic pianist/songwriter tradition -- ensured the trio a long-lasting legacy after their split in October 2000. The band also provided a launching...
