Album Review

Belgian producer Benoit Franquet makes his debut under the project name Pole Folder with the luxurious downtempo electronica of Zero Gold. Little if any new stylistic ground is broken on this album, which is all slow beats, chilly electronic textures, and occasional sweet female vocals. The spacious, subtle arrangements betray an ambient influence, but these songs are poppy in the sense that Air's best material is: Franquet doesn't appear to be attempting any kind of mainstream crossover, but the catchy, obsessively repeated chorus in "Scared to Lose" would be immediately appealing even to someone who doesn't normally listen to this brand of sleek electronica, and Shelly Harland's Sarah Cracknell-like lead vocals on the tuneful "Fall in Violet" are equally memorable. Even more traditional instrumentals like the twitchy, unsettling "Morning Crow" have subtle but effective hooks. Zero Gold is that rare downtempo album that not only makes appealing background listening, but repays closer attention as well.

A Deep Hypnotic Ride

Zero Gold provides a lush sound for the ears and Pole Folders use of bass and wonderful vocals from himself and others such as Shelly Harland, carries you through each song without pause. For those who love this genre, you would be doing yourself a favor by purchasing this album. Even people new to this genre should at least pick up Abrasion, Waterfalls of Love, Fall in Violet or Morning Crow. Every song has a nuance and hypnotizing aura about it that makes you fall into the music. Pole Folder has a distinct sound and it was great to hear some of his guitar skills coming up into the music here and there. Enjoy this album and prepare for a deep hypnotic ride that's very chill and full of bass.

I have never really been a fan of Electronica or Trance but I bought this after a recommendation from a friend. Wow, this is just an amazing, beautifully lush piece of work. Sit back, close your eyes and be immersed. There are so many little things going on in the background but it doesn't feel busy, it just works. This guy may have changed my mind about this genre of music. Incredibly well done and an excellent recording. You won't be disappointed.
