Album Review

A Swedish artist who's given to the same match of irresistible songwriting and immaculate indie pop production as acts ranging from the Cardigans to Peter Bjorn and John, Kristoffer Ragnstam deserves to be in the same company. Sweet Bills, his debut album after a breakthrough EP, doesn't lack for great songs, all of them informed by Ragnstam's self-abasing wit, best heard on "Man Overboard" ("There is a man overboard, I think it's me"). Most of his songs are overlaid with a driving rhythm that puts the power into power pop, and his vocals don't have the soft-spoken feel of most indie pop, but fans of great contemporary pop/rock shouldn't worry — the attention to detail and craft throughout each production is impressive. The first two songs, "Breakfast by the Mattress" and "Man Overboard," instantly catapult him into a category reached by few others in the pop underground, and if there's nothing more compelling after the first five minutes, nearly every song is worth hearing.

Customer Reviews

This album is fantastic from start to finish. Sweet Bills is a sweet blend of indie rock and a little Swedish flavor called "Ragnstam." This Swede is going to be a big hit..even if it takes a few months for people to take notice. He's already adored by critics, and I'm sure the public won't be far behind.

I really like this guy, I don't remember at all how I found him, since I'm in the U.S. and we never hear about him....but my all-time favorite song by him isn't on here, Beauty!

Swedish singer/songwriter Kristoffer Ragnstam got his start as a non-drummer in a non-musical band. That band, Blind, had one simple rule: no members were to actually play their chosen instruments. Ragnstam eventually moved away from such endeavors, assembling a band and demoing a number of songs that resulted in the EP Do You Want a Piece of Me. He then formed a more "official" band, Electric-4, made up of Andreas Gidlund (saxophone), Per Stålberg (guitar and Division of Laura Lee member), and Ludwig...
