Editors’ Notes

On a roll of renewed creativity in the studio and onstage, Bob Dylan issued Love and Theft in 2001. After the swampy sound and troubled thoughts of Time Out of Mind, the album was something of a romp. With perhaps his greatest band since working with, well, the Band, Dylan again put his own stamp on many different forms of American music: rockabilly ("Summer Days"), Appalachian styles ("HighWater (For Charley Patton)"), tough electric blues ("Cry a While"), even BingCrosby-era pop ("Moonlight"). He even cracked jokes, at one point quoting Groucho Marx's old line about room service sending up a room. Not everything was copacetic; the apocalyptic tone of "High Water" dovetailed with the record's release date, September 11, and Dylan's cast of mind still seemed a worried one.

As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
