Reseña de álbum

Rounder's celebration of Bill Morrissey's 20th anniversary as a recording artist, dubbed The Essential Collection, is a hearty 20-track collection culling at least one track from each record he's released over the years, except for the duet album with Greg Brown, Friend of Mine. The label did a fine job assembling the tracks with a comfortable flow to showcase Morrissey at his poetic best, and while all of these songs are welcome collected together in one place, the three new tracks Morrissey recorded for inclusion on the release are the biggest treat here. "Fifty," his affirming song that distills the stereotype of those "over the hill," is a stripped-down, comical number that appears early in the collection and boasts, "Hey you kids, this ain't no jive/But I've seen the Beatles live," and as if to rub it in a bit further he croons another benefit of being born a half century ago: "Best of all, I can't get drafted." The other two new tracks, "Just Today" and "Boston Eyes," close out the collection. "Just Today" is a playful, jaunty folk-pop number and "Boston Eyes" features a more subdued melody, but both are played with the easy, freewheeling confidence fans have come to expect from Morrissey and will, no doubt, be a big draw to this collection for fans of his work.

A Master Songwriter

Bill Morrissey's talent for evoking emotion in a song is unparalleled. This collection provides a good foundation of some of his greatest songs. He can make you laugh out loud "Letter from Heaven", sigh, "Birches" and darn near cry "These Cold Fingers". His reconfiguration of the folk classic "Handsome Molly" provides descriptive imagery, "I park my cab on Water Street, waiting for a fair, watching young girls in their first heels, step like colts across the square . . ." If you enjoy great songs, with lyrical depth and singing that is emotionally driven, I urge you to bring Bill into your collection.

Bill Morrissey: The Essential Collection

A large cup full of Morrissey's wry, regional songwriting froth that fills all the needs.

Short Stories

Each Morrissey song is like a short story and his voice, a unique instrument, conveys the characters and their stories quite effectively. Recommended.

Nacido/a: Hartford, CT, 25 de noviembre de 1951

Género: Cantautores

Años de actividad: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Beginning in the mid-'80s, Bill Morrissey released a series of albums of original songs that startled and delighted the following he built up touring around the Northeast. By his second LP, North, he'd been picked up by the Philo division of Rounder Records. Morrissey sang in a surprisingly flexible, deep voice (somewhat reminiscent of Leon Redbone's croak, but more supple). His songs were full of humor and pathos, expressed in keenly observed details about small-town life, sometimes desperate, sometimes...
