Editors’ Notes

On album number four, San Francisco psych-poppers the Fresh & Onlys trade in their hint of murk for breezy guitars and airy harmonies, and the payoff is hefty. Tim Cohen is a masterful songwriter, who thus far has camouflaged his estimable skills in a variety of projects catering to indie pop fans with more outre tastes. (It should be noted that bassist/creative co-captain Shayde Sartin co-wrote several tunes here.) Long Slow Dance is like a coming out for a beautiful debutante, tomboy edges polished with softer tones and pretty colors. Fully formed pop songs emerge, not shy about their cohesiveness, mature melodies or winsome formulas, and Cohen’s voice has never sounded better. Certain tracks – “20 Days & 20 Nights,” “Long Slow Dance” and “No Regard” in particular – evoke jangly, indie pop classics, from The Go-Betweens to The Smiths. Other tunes are just off-center enough with lysergic undertones or garage rock edge that they exude 100% pure Fresh & Onlys greatness (“Yes or No” and “Presence of Mind”), and they knock the ball out of the park with blistering rockers like “Foolish Person” and “Do What I Came To Do.”

Customer Reviews

Perfect pop record. Album of the year material. Great voice, great guitar tones. Classic pop ala Only Ones/Church, etc. Truly timeless.

Perfectly crafted album!

One of the best releases this year. An excellent album. Songs are great. Tim's voice sounds excellent. Sharp production. Can't wait to see them on tour!

Kinda sounds like early R.E.M.

I like it, I think I'll consider the vinyl record.

The Fresh & Onlys started out as a collaboration between frontman Tim Cohen (Black Fiction) and bassist Shayde Sartin, who started putting songs together in 2004. The Fresh & Onlys' lineup eventually expanded to include Kyle Gibson, Wymond Miles, and Heidi Alexander (who soon left the band); drawing from a hodgepodge of influences (among them Buzzcocks, the Mekons, and Country Joe MacDonald), the new lineup arrived over time at a grimy yet sunny pop sound along the lines of Saturday Looks Good to...
