Editors’ Notes

One of the finest dancehall releases of the '90s, Passion finally secured for Lady Saw the title of Queen of the Dancehall, which she’d been claiming ever since setting Kingston soundclashes alight with her sexually explicit lyrics at the tender age of 15. The album took the dancehall world by storm and made an impact on international markets largely thanks to the success of the single “Under the Sycamore Tree,” a cleverly delivered tale of innocence lost set to Dave “Rude Boy” Kelly’s take on the propulsive Joyride rhythm. Yet one shouldn’t let “Sycamore Tree” distract from Passion’s other attractions. There are blazing guest verses from Beenie Man, Shaggy, and others, as well as unexpected, often deliciously smutty adaptations of standards like Mickey & Sylvia’s “Love Is Strange” and Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore,” which becomes the basis of Saw’s unrepentant infidelity anthem "Gal No Worry.”

Genre: Reggae

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Born in 1972 in the small Jamaican village of St. Mary's, Marion Hall signed to the Jamaican grassroots label VP Records and debuted in 1994 with Lover Girl. Lady Saw soon proved she was up to the challenge of Jamaica's rudest boys by teaming up with Shabba Ranks on the single "Want It Tonight."...
