Album Review

Recorded December 7, 1993, at the Whisky-a-Go-Go in Hollywood, CA, this is a David Crosby live album and a good representation of his solo concert performances. In fact, it's a little better than usual since Crosby is joined by singers Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and his old partner Graham Nash. Crosby splits the 71-minute set just about evenly between more recent solo efforts — including two newly written songs — and faithful renditions of favorites from his Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young days. Inadvertently, the set list serves to confirm that the latter represents his best work, while at the same time songs like "Long Time Gone" and "Wooden Ships" have been heard so often in studio and live performances that there isn't much reason to have additional recordings of them. The album's chief virtue is in the expression of Crosby's personality, but there isn't enough of that. So, while these are often spirited performances, they don't add to our understanding of the artist the way a live album should.

Changed my life...

I thought title my review "inspiration to aspire to" because it was on this particular tour I saw David Crosby for the first time in a very intimate venue in Seattle Wa. called "the backstage". Could not have been more than 150 people there.. Sounded just like this audience recording.

The venue closed down years ago so to have this recording for $6.99 was worth every penny.

The musicianship is so effortless and genuine that I left the show saying to myself "I just witnessed greatness". And they made you feel as though it was all about gratitude that we were even there to listen.

No Mr. Crosby.. The gratitude was all mine. Your presentation that evening introduced a 21 year old young man to a new understanding of how musicians can connect with their audience in a way that places them in a moment of their life they will never forget and wish to return to maybe just once before the pearly gates come a callin'.

This is Crosby refreshed and back with a new found energy which lifts each musician he shares the stage with to an ecstatic level. Let the audience indicate what that energy feels like in such an intimate setting. I know the group picked as a preference to do smaller venues for just that reason. There are zero mistakes.. Just crisp, clear, satisfaction to behold for your listening pleasure.

In my opinion more established musicians should play the smaller venues.. It's truly where the talent shines.. And you feel it, that's all I can say about this album! Ha!

Almost Cut My Hair

Chris Robinson singing on Almost Cut My Hair is worth buying the whole album.

The singular odyssey of David Crosby remains one of the more remarkable tales in the annals of music history. As a founding member of the pioneering American groups the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, he helped create and popularize the highly influential folk-rock sound, forging the richly harmonic, radiantly acoustic approach that defined the West Coast music scene for years to follow; he also sold millions of records and enjoyed a cultural impact equaled by few of his contemporaries. Yet despite...
