iTunes Review

Hammock co-founders Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson endured a series of trials over the course of 2010, including the near-decimation of Byrd’s home during the Nashville floods in May. Out of these difficult times comes Longest Year, a five-track EP that deepens and extends the duo’s trademark Southern ambient sound. With the aid of Sixpence None the Richer’s Matt Slocum on cello, Hammock paints broad, resonant aural landscapes with meticulously layered guitars and synthesizer textures. The music’s masonry is grand yet not forbidding, with rivers of melody coursing through monolithic glacial drones and sparkling accents. The title composition (featuring Slocum’s expressive string work) and “Lonely, Some Quietly Wander In the Hall of Stars” achieve a particular beauty in their gracefully sculpted lines and billowy pacing. The cavernous rumbling beneath “Cruel Sparks” underpins a delicate tunefulness, while “One Another” moves with the austere majesty of a sailing vessel on an arctic sea.

Oh Hammock...

Haven't even listened yet but because it's Hammock I'm sure it will destroy everything on earth except for maybe Justin Bieber. Now that's raw talent

An Album Created Far From Here

Hammock has had quite the track record. All of their albums sound mildly different yet maintain a steady stream of musical eloquence. This album doesn't break any new ground for the band, but what it does do is provide a trip the into the depths of ones' heart. Through all the good, all the bad - the listener can always identify the mood throughout the entirety of the "Longest Year". From the ascent into Heaven in "Dark Beyond the Blue" to the heartfelt humanity of "One Another" - Hammock not only delights, but overwhelms the listener with indescribable emotions in the best way imaginable.

Hammock never disappoints

This "non ambient, ambient album" is similar to their EP North West East South, but it has its own unique sound filled with highs and lows. I highly recommend this one, Hammock never lets me down!
