Customer Reviews

This album is classic rock goodness.

Rainer Maria is a band that starts off slow, picks up, and grabs you. This is the band's first full-length album and perhaps their best. The band features just three members, and the sound is absolutely intoxicating. Listen to the song, “Rise,” which starts off slow, with beautiful lyrics like, “say nothing if its false…” A pause allows drummer William Kuehn to accelerate the urgency of lead singer Caithlin De Marrais’ voice. And that is when the song just holds your attention and your heart. De Marrais is admittedly with limited vocal range. But that is exactly what makes her the more special. You can hear her straining and you sympathize with her emotions. Occasionally, guitarist Kyle Fischer backs up De Marrais and the results are profound. Two key songs in the album that feature both Fischer and De Marrais are “Broken Radio” and “Breakfast of Champions.” These two songs are so well constructed that they should be destined for continuous iPod replay. Although this may be disputed, I feel that “The Reason the Night is Long” is the finest example of the artistry Rainer Maria’s three-piece unit. Please consider this album.

simply amazing

Rainer Maria, which include the members Caithlin de Marrais, Kyle Fischer, and William Kuehn, have been making music since the mid 90's. This band also seems to be the only emo band with female vocals as its lead. I picked this up on a whim, which i do most of the time. but there was something different about this purchase. I listened to it, and was captivated by the melody. "Rise", a beautiful intro song, captures you in a swirl of pretty female vocals and a one note guitar line. The end of it flows right into "Planetary", personally my favorite song on the cd and in their discography. Because of this cd, i went and bought everything in their discography, and yesterday, april 4, 2006, walked to a record store, because i am anal about having the actual cd, to purchase their new album. Anyways, if you are looking for an emo/indie band with phenominal lyrics, a sensational female lead, and melodies that will get stuck in your head for days on end, buy this cd. then check out the rest of their stuff. you shall not be dissapointed.

Amazes with every listen

Rainer Maria is a trio of art rockers from the midwest (who relocated to Brooklyn) who use their emotion to enhance their music. Look Now, Look Again is an album that stays in motion from the minute you press play. It has sweeping, beautiful moments "Rise", "Broken Radio" to full out Rock moments "Breakfast of Champions", "I'm Melting" and everything in between. The dual-vocals of Caithlin and Kyle can strike you as an odd combination at first, but with each listen the unique qualities carve a permanent home in your heart. RM have long since done away with the dual-vocals and it's something that is for the worst. I love this album.

Madison, WI, emo trio Rainer Maria emerged in 1995 from the ashes of another poetically inclined local combo, Ezra Pound, reuniting singer/guitarist Kyle Fischer and drummer William Kuehn. Enlisting singer/bassist Caithlin De Marrais, within six weeks Rainer Maria recorded their first demo cassette, quickly selling out all 350 copies. Following a handful of compilation appearances, the group resurfaced in 1996 with a self-titled EP on Polyvinyl; the single "New York: 1955" appeared in early 1997,...
