Album Review

While the R&B charts were being dominated by such artists as Prince and Luther during the '80s, Isley Jasper Isley were quietly building up a catalog of soulful quiet storm ballads that took the market by its silk shirt and announced their takeover. Not entirely a departure from their Isley Brothers work from the previous decade, this anthology focuses on the evolution of their songwriting and production skills to the clean, overly chorused sound that dominated the genre. The underlying grooves that were a hallmark of their past endeavors still remain the focal point, but there's more of an emphasis on the slowly emerging quiet storm sound that was developing at the time. It's an essential compilation for fans who never made the switch from vinyl/cassette to compact disc, and it's also the perfect starting ground for those curious about the later phases of the Isley family's career paths.

Overlooked and under-rated

I am a huge Isley Brothers fan, and enjoy most of their diverse recordings. But it always strikes me as odd just what little credit Chris Jasper, Ernie Isley, and Marvin Isley truly get for the group's success. Isley Jasper Isley was been demoted to a mere footnote in the history of the Isley Brothers, a sad injustice. Chris Jasper (the group's lead singer) is not Ronald Isley, and comparing the two is pointless. I never got the sense that Jasper was trying to sing like anyone else but himself. These three men carried on the brilliant instrumentation from the 3+3 era in their records, that is thoroughly lacking in the Ronald-O'Kelly-Rudolph record "Masterpiece." Granted, these songs need to be listened to in a time context: it was the 80's and synthesizers were all the rage. But these men had the ability to infuse soul in all that electric programming. And they wrote and produced themselves! Jasper still records, and Ernie has taken a rather sad position as occasional soloist in Mr. Biggs' modern releases. Each time I listen to the "duo's" modern releases, I'm disappointed to hear how little of the creative genius of Ernie is used. Marvin no longer plays due to his diabetes. However, I can't help but wonder why Ernie and Chris don't take this opportunity to record a CD together. While Ron is in jail, it would be a dream come true for these two men to collaborate....I'm not suggesting they release a cover album, or even a R. Kelly/Timberland produced commercial sell-out. I'm saying they should get together and produce and write their OWN material. The only outside collaborater I would suggest would be a truly daring move: Bring in the other underated "member" of the Isley Brothers: the remarkable Angela Winbush. The fusion of all three would truly be amazing. Record companies might complain about a lack of commercial value.....but true music lovers would be forever grateful!

isley, jasper, isley

Great to hear from these guys . Wish i could get the album Brodway closer to sunset blvd.

A Very Underated Album Collection

A Great compilation. These Trio embodied the Isley Brothers sound, taking nothing away from the older brothers since they started it all and are legends in their own right. Isley/Jasper/Isley kept true to their music with passion and energy. Chris Jasper is the only one of them still recording today and still putting out good music with that Isley sound, since Ron's out of jail it's past time 4 a reunion. Whatever their difference's were in the past, should be forgivin by each other because they are family. Let's not wait till death to start apologizing. This fan would love to see the current trio Ron, Ernie & Chris back together doing what they do best: putting together great music! It would be a crime if those guys don't get back 2gether. They can show this current crop of R&B singers what great music is about. Rest in peace Marvin u were one of the best....much love to Isley's & Jasper family b at peace baby!!!

A spin-off from the Isley Brothers, bassist Marvin Isley, drummer/guitarist Ernie Isley, and their keyboardist/brother-in-law Chris Jasper worked in the Isley Brothers' "3 + 3" band from 1969 until 1984. They signed with CBS as a separate entity and had substantial success with their debut LP, Broadway's Closer to Sunset Blvd. (1984). Caravan of Love (1985) included an R&B chart-topping single in the title cut, which had a three-week reign. They scored three other Top 20 R&B singles, "Insatiable...
