Complete Strangers

Complete Strangers

Listening to Andy Cabic’s post-2008 work with Vetiver, it's hard to believe he was ever associated with the freak-folk of Devendra Banhart. Working with former Pernice Brother and in-demand producer Thom Monahan, Cabic has steadily smoothed and refined his music until even the Laurel Canyon strains of Tight Knit have settled into a soft rock/Jack Johnson–type affair. “Loose Ends” provides a jangling folk-rock kick. “Shadows Lane” and “Time Flies By” offer gentle melodies and laid-back rhythms that are quite beautiful. The seven-minute, synth-heavy opener, “Stranger Still,” is interesting but not representational in context of the mellowness that follows.
