iTunes Editors’ Notes

It’s not surprising that Sara Watkins would make her 2009 solo debut an eclectic affair – as a mainstay with Nickel Creek, she’s often veered away from her bluegrass roots towards unfamiliar terrain. Sara Watkins, with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones as producer, ventures out still further. Her crystalline voice and keening fiddle help maintain her connection with folk idioms and her unvarnished renditions of John Hartford’s “Long Hot Summer Days” and Tom Waits’ “Pony” are very much in a traditional grain, as is her string-band jam approach to Jimmie Rodgers’ “Any Old Time.” But there are modern pop elements to be found here as well, heard in the melancholy glide of “Same Mistakes” and the simmering groove of “Too Much.” Watkins’ original tunes add yet another distinctive twist — “Bygones” fuses lustrous harmonies with an oddly contoured melody, while “Where Will You Be” reveals a mature lyric sensibility. Call it alt-folk or acoustic art-pop, Sara Watkins is a delightfully diverse effort united by the artist’s understated virtuosity.

Amazing...as expected...

Wow, this is amazing. 'Where Will You Be' is beautiful like some midwestern landscape, and 'All This Time' is just...wow. I had heard that song at Nickel Creek concerts, but to have a studio recording, it's great. Can't wait to hear these live... especially 'Same Mistakes', 'Too Much', and 'Pony'. I was a little bit worried that the rawness of her voice might not be captured, but the production on this is not overdone. This solo album was definitely worth the wait. Awesome job, Sara!

Well Done

Do you remember when you used to count the days till your favorite artist's next release? Maybe you still do, but I haven't found very many artists out there lately worth waiting on. Except for Sara Watkins and the rest of the Nickel Creek members. None of their collective or solo works have let me down, not least this latest release from Sara. I am glad to see that she is branching out, and maturing as an artist, (which is an overstatement, she has been mature for quite some time now). I recommend listening to anything you can get your hands on by Sara and the rest of Nickel Creek.

Strong Debut

Impressed with the performance - enjoyed hearing "All This Time" as a studio track as I have heard it a couple times in concert. While you never *quite* get a Nickel Creek reunion (Sean is on a few tracks and Chris co-arranges and plays on "Give Me Jesus"), it is a pleasure to hear them all back performing - if not all at once , then singularly. Add them to a star-studded cast of musicians and John Paul Jones overseeing a very nice mix, anyone who is a fan of NC will definitely enjoy this effort - Sara has never sounded better! recommended!
