iTunes Review

Calle 13 — the Puerto Rican duo of rapper Residente (René Pérez) and producer Visitante (Eduardo Cabra) — have always drawn sounds from beyond reggaeton, and on their third album, Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, they further expand their musical palette. Residente unleashes Spanish lyrics that are sharp, humorous, and at times surreal, while Visitante creates tracks that draw from Dixieland (“Ven y Critícame”), Slavic brass bands (“Fiesta de Locos”), and old school Nuyorican Freestyle (“Electro Movimiento”). There are also snippets of classical music, cumbia, funky guitar scratches, West African grooves, and other elements. A couple of outstanding guest artists make key contributions: On “No Hay Nadie Como Tú,” the Mexican band Café Tacuba spins out springy polka-rock, and “La Perla” features the Panamanian singer Rubén Blades injecting the sinuous flow of a great sonero into the mix, which makes for a nice contrast to Residente’s hard-edged raps. The closing track, “John el Esquizofrénico,” is one of this excellent album’s highlights. Over a midtempo beat, Residente lets the words fly as Mellotron and slide guitar evoke psych-period Beatles.

The Greats Return!!

Residente of Calle13 is one of the greatest in Hip-Hop history, and Visitante of Calle13 is one of the most versatile today. Mix them together and you've got Magic...

Best Album of All-Time

This is the most awaited album of the year for me especially and many others. Calle 13 is the best latin urban group that has ever existed. This album is quoted by Universal Music Studios as "an unique album that has never been heard before, a masterpiece". The beats are newly aquired from Europe by Visitante and Residente comes back again with amazing, daring, and hardcore lyrics. Calle 13 has done it again. This album has to be purchased. Its defientely a must have.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

It took the Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 roughly one year to catch on, after quietly debuting stateside in 2005 on White Lion (a small reggaeton label in partnership with Sony BMG) — but catch on they certainly did. By the end of the following year, Calle 13 had become the hottest new artist in popular Latin music, garnering Grammy attention as well as widespread critical notices and steadily mounting album sales. Comprised of vocalist Residente (born René Pérez Joglar) and producer Visitante...
