Editors’ Notes

With its fusion of indie rock, funk, rap and blues, Mellow Gold established Beck as one of the most creative singer-songwriters around. Released in 1994, the album, once you get past the overplayed radio anthem "Loser," still sounds fresh today. Beck turns in a fine Dylan-esque performance on "Pay No Mind (Snoozer);" he raps on "Beercan;" and on "Blackhole" he tries to be an alt-rock version of late guitar great John Fahey. Underneath all the lo-fi touches is a great blues album trying to get out, but overall the whole shebang is too weird and diverse to classify except to say that it's a groundbreaking work, and truly essential album.

Customer Reviews

beck is the man

I really go into beck as the reaction to the mainstream music that is being boadcasted daily and is ruining kids, like my little sister's, minds. mainstream music is full of talentless people, cookie cutter generic nonsense, and unfortunately is very imaged based. Beck is a true visionary and he creates songs like "loser" which defy the laws of traditional music and remain extremely listenable and catchy. But people should also know that beck and this album is not just about loser. one listen to "Beercan" and you will be instantly addicted. That song is definetely my favorite. My other favorites are "Pay No Mind (Snoozer)", "Soul Suckin' Jerk", and "Nightmare Hippy Girl". Listen to any of the songs i listed and you will not be dissappointed. This album is often overlooked because it only scored one major hit, unlike many of becks future albums, however it still holds up as the album that started it all for beck and is still being played by eccentric indie kids everywhere.

his anthem=loser!!!!!

this is what beck is all about... and a lot of kids really need more songs like this

Golden Boy

Sometimes when a really great piece of work comes along, it can take time to really appreciate it. I knew Loser was a great track the first time I heard it, but it took me time to understand Mellow Gold. Now I can't believe this album. It is brillliant. Well written, funny, and catchy. There really isn't any album quite like it, and I still prefer it to everything else he has done.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Initially pegged as the voice of a generation when "Loser" turned into a smash crossover success, Beck wound up crystallizing much of the postmodern ruckus inherent in the '90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise-rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manner of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash rock, pop, soul, lounge music — pretty much any found sound or vinyl dug up from a dusty crate — blurring boundaries and encapsulating...
