EDITORS’ NOTES

Whether featuring for Drake (“Get It Together” from More Life) or the Marvel cinematic universe (“I Am” from the Kendrick Lamar-curated Black Panther soundtrack), Jorja Smith brings refreshing vulnerability to hip-hop and R&B. The singer/songwriter frames fragile thoughts in a durable voice on Lost & Found, a reference to frequent travels between her hometown of industrial Walsall and swinging London. She turns heartbreak into beauty on “Goodbyes” and “Tomorrow.” Then she cools it off with loose hip-hop excursions: “Blue Lights” shows her grime IQ with a tasteful Dizzee Rascal interpolation, and on “Lifeboats (Freestyle),” Jorja drops Lauryn Hill-like bars and belts out her own hooks. Fans of Lorde or FKA twigs should check out “Teenage Fantasy” and “The One,” both of which pack bumping, luscious arrangements.

Jorja carries master abilities of being able to transform words into emotions. So far, Teenage Fantasy, Where Did I Go?, and Blue Lights have all amazed me. I can’t wait for the rest of the rest of the album. She sparks the likes of Kelela, Kali Uchis, etc. who are all pushing the R&B/Soul, and even Electronic sound. Jorja is apart of this decorative narrative, and it’s her talent and character is nothing but brilliant within her song-scape. Lost & Found will be a summer recollective, making memories, and falling into feeling on breezy hot nights. I can’t imagine a better sound-scape. Thank you, Jorja. This is brilliant.

About Jorja Smith

Jorja Smith is an English R&B singer/songwriter whose soulful, jazz-tinged cadence, heartfelt lyrics, and retro sound invoke names like Alunageorge, Nao, Lulu James, and Amy Winehouse, the latter of whom the Walsall-based artist cites as her biggest influence. Smith issued her debut single, "Blue Lights," in 2015, but it was 2016's powerful "Where Did I Go?" that began turning heads. That track, and the follow-up single "Beautiful Little Fools," eventually culminated in the late-2016 release of Smith's debut EP, Project 11. The following year saw her international profile elevated via her multiple appearances on Drake's surprise playlist/LP More Life, which saw her holding court among a bevy of high-profile guests like Kanye West, Young Thug, 2 Chainz, and Travis Scott. That same year, Smith released a pair of her own singles, "Beautiful Little Fools" and "Teenage Fantasy," as well as the collaborative single "On My Mind," with Preditah. In January 2018, she released the dark and moody "Let Me Down," which featured U.K. grime artist Stormzy. ~ James Christopher Monger
