Gorgeous and exceptional

"My Ship" from the album "Lost in the Stars" is a one-man show of melodic mastery multiplied four or five times, in the person of trombonist Larry Zalkind. Zalkind, in replicating himself to perform as his own back-up group, is as seamless and mellifluous as the backup singers for Elvis Presley - you didn't know their names, but you heard their understated perfection. I could listen to a whole of album of Larry Zalkind performing up-tempo jazz standards in this same style, a SuperSax for trombone. The song "Ship" is sentimentally evocative in its own right, but Zalkind also brings spot-on, soulful phrasings that other trombonists would like to aspire to. Is this impressive song selling well on iTunes? I'll bet if it isn't already, it will be as soon as musicians compare notes.

Despite their classical backgrounds, the Zalkinds (Larry, Roberta and Matt) have collaborated with Jeff Colella, Frank Marocco and Chris Colangelo on something so original, so interesting in “Mack the Knife” that it can only be called pure jazz. You will not find a take on the standard like this anywhere - Deborah Shulman carves out a unique performance that balances the score’s nuances and the other performers, while bringing a level that communicates the intimacy of a cabaret. Bobby Darin would have been knocked out by the care taken with this song.

This is lovely!!

Some of my favorite music executed with soul and style.

Lost In The Stars... Wow!!!

I LOVE this CD! The arrangements, vocals, and musicianship on this album are extraordinary! It is the perfect music for any occasion. The beauty and sophisticated style- suits every mood. The first time I listened to it, it was after a difficult day. It was so incredibly beautiful that it turned my day around. Now I play it in my car, on my ipod and in my house... Every song is different and exquisite. Buy this album... Play it during dinner party, enjoy it after a long day at work, or with a glass of champagne... Savor every song... Emmmm. Lovely!
