Modern Jazz Played at the Highest Level

This has been out of print way too long. This ensemble is as skilled as they come. And they clearly came to play for this epic session. Woody Shaw - tp, Steve Turre - tb, b-tb, Mulgrew Miller - p, Stafford James - b, and Tony Reedus - dr. Every song on Lotus Flower is of phenomenal calibre, no filler, starting with the exotic Eastern Joy Dance. Game, swings as hard as anything I've ever heard. The title track is simply off-the-hook. You need to also check out Steve Turre's version of Lotus Flower on his own recording of the same name. Rahsan's Run, Woody's tribute to the great Roland Kirk, burns at break-neck speed. Song of Songs is a nice 3/4 piece to end the set on a strong note. Woody's life and career were tragically cut short, but this is a testament to what a excellent musician and bandleader he was.
