Album Review

Unmitigated Audacity is a bootleg album, released by Frank Zappa without enhancement, and also available as part of the Beat the Boots! box set. It contains what sounds like an audience tape of a performance by Zappa and the Mothers at Notre Dame University on May 12, 1974, and it is notable mainly for including a set list largely consisting of songs originally heard on the first few Mothers albums — "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" and "Let's Make the Water Turn Black," among others — as played by a later lineup. This means, for example, that you get to hear George Duke sing "How Could I Be Such a Fool." That's a modest recommendation, however, for a poor-sounding recording.

Terrible Sound Quality

Good set list, but Terrible Sound Quality. I would suggest getting other albums first and only getting this one if you are a super serious collector and you have to have them ALL!

Horrible sound quality

Like the above poster mentioned, the sound quality is terrible. It sounds like it was recorded from a stereo playing in the next room.

Simultaneously Great And Terrible...

Although this album has the WORST sound quality of all the "Beat The Boots" I have heard, it has a unique fantastic live version of one of my favorite early Zappa songs: "You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here." That track alone makes this album essential for me.

His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on jazz and complicated, modern serious music, sometimes inducing orchestras to play along. As if his music were not...
