iTunes Editors’ Notes

Bob Pollard eats, sleeps, breathes and sweats music. His unrelenting creativity has defied all odds and logic. Yet, whether it’s Guided By Voices or his solo career or one of his many side projects, there’s a bizarre and wondrous consistency to his output. Circus Devils is the side project he formed with Todd and Tim Tobias, who provide the music and production for Pollard’s voice and lyrics. Thirty-two tracks in 68 minutes means most of the tunes pass in a whirring blur, gone before you know what’s hit you. This instamatic approach makes it hard to keep score, but like all Pollard’s recordings there are moments that immediately compel repeated listening, whether it’s the warped piano of “Nicky Highpockets,” the weird loopy space jams like “The Assassins’ Ballroom” and “The Winner’s Circle,” or the bedroom punk rock of ‘Love Hate Relationships With the Human Race” that sounds like John Lennon stepped out of the “Cold Turkey” recording sessions and borrowed a band from the corner bar. Naturally, there’s some filler, but considering that most songs never make it to two minutes, it’s hardly noticeable in the grand chaos of things.

If you like GBV or anything Bob-related, you'll like this. Hard to the best pop-prog moments of GBV meets the best experimental-sound collage moments of GBV.
What the hell, just go ahead and buy it. It gets better upon every listen. Is there no end to the depths of Bob's creative well?

According to the group's whimsical website bio, Circus Devils formed because a dog-faced man approached each member on separate occasions to deliver the message, "Circus Devils...
