iTunes Review

One of the measures of a standard is that it can be revisited in a variety of styles. While there’s no straight bossa nova or reggaeton on (Ǎhk-to͝ong Bāy-Bi) Covered, this track-by-track all-star tribute to U2’s landmark 1991 album Achtung Baby does cover an impressive range of approaches. Nine Inch Nails open with a surprisingly understated electro version of “Zoo Station,” and Jack White closes things out with a swampy, organ-drenched southern Gothic version of “Love Is Blindness.” Some contributors go acoustic and more intimate (Damien Rice on “One,” Patti Smith on “Until the End of the World”), while others keep it futuristic and mostly electronic (Depeche Mode’s take on “So Cruel,” Garbage reworking “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”). The Killers even do a double tribute by seemingly channeling Queen on the intro to “Ultra Violet (Light My Way).” Achtung Baby was the project that transformed U2 from earnest stadium rockers to futurist cyber-pop modernists, and (Ǎhk-to͝ong Bāy-Bi) Covered further explores, expands upon, and even focuses the source material of that legacy.

Achtung, indeed

I hate writing this, because I'm a lifelong U2 fan, and I'm all for charity albums, but this record is just *bad*. It's confounding how many high-profile, high-energy performers delivered tracks that sound tired and, even more unforgivable, *boring*. To top it off, most of the songs sound like they were recorded on home computers… of the mid-90s! Which is also very puzzling, considering who these artists are. If anything, this collection just served to remind me how good the original album is.

Pay close attention to the previews before you waste any hard-earned money on this.

This is what a tribute/cover album should be. So many times when artists get the opportunity to cover a song they try so hard to recreate the original recording that it's a bit lame - I already have U2 singing it like U2 so why would I need your version trying to do the same thing. The original album released in '91 was way ahead of it's time. These versions of the songs not only reflect the spirit of the original, but have the qualities of the covering artists sonically and tonally creating a new and rewarding experience when listening. A must have with the added bonus of sales going to a charity.

The killers (light my way)

Awesome cover. Bought the album just for the killers song!
