CHRISETTE SAVES R&B!

Chrisette Michele first caught my ear when she was featured on Nas' "Can't Forget About You," on his 'Hip-Hop is Dead' disk. I thought, that it was genius of Nas to incorporate Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole on a track - but to my surprise Billie Holiday was in fact Chrisette Michele, a 22 year-old Long Island Native who incorporates all elements of R&B into a voice that immediately brought me back to the excitement I had for Jill Scott back in 2000. When was the last time we heard real, new feel good music? It seems as if we have to dig into a vault of Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Rachelle Ferrell, Lalah Hathaway or Rahassan Patterson to relax...all that comes to an end today! Her voice, so poised, so controlled, so refreshing...so rich. She doesn't have to do runs of vocal tricks to draw you in. She simply SINGS - something that the industry has been lacking since the days of Deborah Cox and the golden age of Whitney Houston. I am convinced that Chrisette Michele may single-handedly return R&B to it's roots of real instruments, real singing, real production and real lyrics. There are only a few disks that are in my library, that I can't immediately recall, that I can play the entire way through. "I Am" will be one of those CD's. I must say that releasing her CD during black music month is more than just perfect timing. In my opinion this is the BEST FEMALE R&B VOCAL OF 07' and the BEST DEBUT OF A FEMALE ARTIST in a while...In an age of Ciara and Beyonce - it is good to hear a young woman go against the norm. Not to say and Beyonce and Ciara lack something...but it's finally good to hear and see a young black woman talk about respect and independence while challenging ideas - while not being half naked and spazzing around to the beat (dancing) while wanting someone to take them serious...get into Chrisette's track "Good Girl." This CD is indescribable in more ways than one. Vocally she gives you what you need, lyrically you get an insightful spin on her world. Production wise you get tracks that can go well with anyone from Sade to Janet Jackson...not overproduced, just right, to put you in the mood for whatever. The thing that saddens me most about artists like Chrisette is that she will have a huge following - but she may not get the props she deserves. She is the bomb! End of discussion. She embraces the elegance of black R&B of the past, present and future...support her! Standout tracks: If I have My Way, In This For You, Is The Way Love Feels, I Am One, Your Joy.

Like A Trip to the Past

With lackluster promotion, it seemed that Def Jam was banking on word of mouth to move units for Chrisette Michele and lucky for her, I Am is a product worthy of word of mouth promotion. You might have heard her on Jay-Z's "Lost Ones" or Nas' "Can't Forget About You," she has a voice that instantly takes you back to the days of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, she really has that beautiful nostaglic voice. "I Am" is a work of love and it shows with Chrisette singing, writing and composing most of the songs on this album, her music is like a much needed breathe of air with all the fast food music that's flooding the radio. "I Am" showcases the many faces and styles of Chrisette Michele, you can hear her jazz, r&b, hip-hop and gospel roots all over this album and it really all flows well together. She has uptempo hip-hop inspired tracks like "Let's Rock" and "Good Girl," where Chrisette shows that women don't always have to chase after a man's wallet, but turning the tables around and suggesting she could even be your "sugar mama." "Golden," is a song that has gained popularity, even before the album was released, "Golden" is such a beautiful song and will likely be played at many future weddings, perhaps even your own one day. The most amazing song on her is "Your Joy," which Chrisette wrote for her father and is the most touching track on "I Am," the melody, the words, the singing, all go straight to your heart. The album fades away perfectly with "Is This the Way Love Feels," with a soulful piano melody and a beautiful guitar to accompany it. If you're a fan of r&b music, you'll definitely love "I Am" and you'll certainly fall in love with Chrisette Michele by the end of the album. My first time listening to this album, I put on a pair of headphones, laid in bed and the music relaxed me so much, that by the end of the album, I was ready to fall asleep. I hope you buy this album and support good music and let's hope Chrisette Michele puts out a second album because she seems like the type of artist that is only going to grow with the years and I can already see a star in the making here. I applaud Def Jam for taking a risk and straying from the pop r&b garbage they've been putting out. Chrisette Michele also has a wholesome image, she's selling you her music, she's not selling you sex and "I Am" is a collection of upbeat, beautiful romantic songs, that is odd to see in an age where sex sells and singers sell their soul just to sell a record. Her image is PG, much like the classic singers of yesterday and hearing her voice is like a taking a trip to much simplier times, when music really was food for the soul.

After Listening..... "I Am" A Big Fan!!!!

After hearing Chrisette Michele on Jay-Z "Lost Ones" and Nas "Can't Forget About You" I was eagerly awaiting this album!!! Let me say I am truly impressed with "I Am" Chrisette Michele reminds me of legends far beyond her time (Sarah, Billie, etc) She fuses all genre of music together so effortless. Her single "If I Had My Way" is a beautiful ballet. On "Mr. Radio" she thanks the radio for the tunes it play to make love (only in away she can get across) She is amazing vocals who will be around with for quite sometime. She hasn't forgot her hip-hop fans on feel in love with her, take a listen to "Let's Rock" where takes a sample of Wu-Tang Clan's "Triumph" along with the sample she sings to all the other singers that's out ".....I've been studying Miss Billie, Miss Ella, Miss Sarah Vaughan & Miss Natalie Cole." The song that really pull me in and won me over was the jazzy "In This For You" with the live instruments and the vocals make you truly feel it. It's worth every penny. Thanks for this album Miss Michele you were be in the classes of the fellow artists you've been studying!!!!!

In a very short span of time, R&B singer/songwriter Chrisette Michele shot from small-time performer up to one of Def Jam's most promising talents, purely based on her unique instrument — a gorgeous and effortlessly versatile singing voice colored with Billie Holiday-esque inflections of vocal pop and jazz. The jazz-influenced vocalist, born Chrisette Michele Payne in 1982, developed her pipes through singing gospel, first performing for a congregation at age four. God and music were clearly...
