Album Review

After releasing an EP in 2008, Carney went AWOL for the better part of two years as frontman Reeve Carney shifting his focus to acting. He starred in Julie Taymor’s version of The Tempest and landed the lead role in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, a rock musical with songs written by U2. Reeve’s bandmates eventually joined the show’s orchestra, but production problems plagued Spider-Man from the very start, pushing its budget past $50 million and making it the most expensive musical in Broadway history. In the midst of the show’s many problems, Carney found time to return to the recording studio and bang out a quick album — one that lacks the promotional push that a functioning Spider-Man would’ve provided, perhaps, but an eclectic rock record nonetheless.

Out of the four tracks that appeared on Carney’s EP, three are reprised here. Inspired by the Black Crowes and a number of ‘70s Southen rock bands, they’re the hardest tunes on the album, with “Testify” featuring a Zeppelin-styled outro (replete with moaning vocals, à la “Whole Lotta Love”) and “Nothing Without You” moving between thick harmonies and heavy power chords. Mr. Green, Vol. 1 also makes room for more left-field tunes, though, from the intimate Jeff Buckley folk of “Think of You” to the jazzy showbiz-pop song “Amelie.” Reeve Carney is still the obvious leader of the group, but his guitar-playing brother pulls more than his share of the weight, making Mr. Green, Vol. 1 a solid family effort.

A force to be reckoned with...

I have been following Carney since their days at Molly Malone's on Fairfax in LA. Their musicianship and musicality is unlike anything else on the market. As one of the best live bands I have ever seen, their music is timeless and will never go out of style. Introduce yourself to a band that will defy time and make you wanna rock out all night long. Carney IS a force to be reckoned with...Reeve, Zane, Aiden, and Jon!

Carney Brilliance.

If you can't understand and fall in love with the sound of this band, you are missing a seriously spiritual experience. These boys are mind blowingly brilliant. I love this band with a passion. They are original and real, and in my opinion the closest thing this generation will ever have to Led Zeplin. Unreal and stunning vocals, untouched guitar playing and unbelievable song writing. The end.

Mr. Green Volume 1

I've been listening to this band for 5-6 years, and Mr. Green Volume 1, their first full length major studio release, is excellent. The album features outstanding vocals, technically sound guitars, and has a superb mix of tempos. Love Me, Chase Me is an edgy rock song to open the album, and is followed by Tomorrow's Another Day, which showcases the vocal talents of the lead singer. The remainder of the album is filled with songs they have recorded in the past, with the exception of Mr. Green. Some of the old songs have different arrangements and feature extended play with a psychedelic bent. Amelie, There She Goes, Nothing Without You, Think of You, and Testify complete this album nicely, and the newer arrangements work well. If you've seen or heard them, you will like this project. If you haven't seen or heard them, you will. Buy the album now and start your Carney collection.

Genre: Rock

Fronted by actor/musician Reeve Carney, the L.A.-based quartet Carney mixes pop/rock, California psychedelia, and Southern-styled stomp into its own sound. Reeve Carney was raised in New York City, where he worked as a child actor and honed his skills on the piano and guitar. After relocating to Southern California, he befriended blues guitarist Jonny Lang and was soon asked to join Lang's touring band. Reeve toured with Lang from 2005 to 2007, playing backup guitar and often serving as the opening...
