iTunes Review

The Submarines are the husband and wife duo of Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti. Blake has a charming, breathy voice that elevates these catchy, well-crafted, and electronica-sweetened pop songs. John adds some vocals but mostly handles the instrumentation, which is a blend of twinkling keyboards, electric guitars, and a vast selection of synthesized sounds. Some acoustic guitar, drums (by Spoon’s Jim Eno), and a string section represent the organic side of their compositions, and while electronic sounds do dominate, the album achieves enough balance between the two that it sounds warm and soothing. Love Notes/Letter Bombs is their third release overall and the second since getting married and the lyrics are about the joys and challenges of keeping love alive past the honeymoon phase. Using vivid metaphors and clever wordplay they explore their relationship with so much candor and tenderness that songs like “A Satellite, Stars and an Ocean Behind You,” “Anymore,” and “Tigers” feel a bit like eavesdropping. Yet even when the lyrics are forlorn optimism shines through in the sunny melodies and infectious rhythms.

The Submarines = Great Quality Music

The Submarines are one of the few bands that I actually look forward to every release. Just very positive and creative music. I'm really digging "Tiger." Proof they are not afraid to go into different territories without losing their roots. Album as a whole is awesome! One thing I've love about this band is that there production is spot on: every bass tone, percussion, vocals, guitar, electronics, etc. just sound perfectly produced and provide full-quality sound. And it's very hard to resist Blake's beautiful vocals.
Love Notes/Letter Bombs is a great addition to an already accomplished career by The Submarines

Another strong album

The Submarines are an indie pop group comprising John Dragonetti (aka Jack Drag) and Blake Hazard, who initially crossed paths while working as solo artists in Boston. Introduced by mutual friends, the pair soon became musically and romantically involved. Dragonetti produced Hazard's debut solo album, 2002's Little Airplane, and they began playing and performing with each other's bands. The couple moved west to Los Angeles to continue their career in warmer environs, but their relationship ended...
