iTunes Review

Formed in Delaware in 2010, this eclectic duo of vocalist Katie Dill and multi-instrumentalist Sam Nobles trips up everyone’s expectations with its 2013 debut album, Love Now, by not adhering to any particular style. “Mother Earth” sounds like a sweet piece of Parisian retro-pop that Camera Obscura wouldn’t mind claiming for its own. “Bop Bop,” the first single, starts as a simple, earnest acoustic guitar folk-pop piece before the arrangement gets more complex just past the minute-and-a-half mark. “One Big Family,” with its tricky, stuttering rhythm, evokes a vibe of early-'70s AM radio pop. “Far Away” starts as a dreamy waltz before restarting as a reggae tune. Hip-hop beats and more errant keyboards follow the weirdness that is “Why’d’ya Haftabee Sucha?,” where Dill sounds more than a little like Blondie’s Debbie Harry trying to navigate the challenges of Autoamerican. A twinkling harp can be heard ushering in “Daisies” and “Lonely” for a retro feel. “Pony Ony O” finds a sitar, while the band shows up later for the festivities of the nine-minute track.
