A nice surprise

Admittedly a Yes fan (yet not a "fanboy"), this was a pleasant surprise-a very organic and original sounding album. Jon's voice is in good form, showing much of the same range he's been known for. He's found some decent studio partners to produce some interesting sounds and this group of songs shows the life and sheen that "The Living Tree" lacked. Great mood set in "Incoming" and "Cloudz" as well as catchy melodies in "Love and Understanding" and "Big Budha."
It's unfortunate that the current Yes band went with a tribute band singer instead of Jon for their new album. Fly From Here suffers from shoddy songwriting and lacks the creatve angle of Jon's writing approach. A few of these songs could have made really nice Yes songs and clearly Jon's voice is still intact.

Alive, well and at his best

Jon Anderson, the voice of Yes, created his latest record "Survival & other stories" in a unique collaboration with musicians that responded to his website request "Musicians wanted. Send me your music" posted four years ago. Ever the spirited innovator and adopter of new technology, Jon pushes the boundaries of music making in the 21st century. All songs were worked on and recorded via the internet, with his collaborators recording in their own home studies around the world and Jon adding his unique vocals and the final production in his home studio in San Luis Obispo. The results are superb and represent easily one of the best works of his over 40 year long career.
Jon sings with renewed energy having survived long standing illnesses and near death experiences in the past four years. The songs present a fresh perspective of his positive outlook on life, love and the spiritual future of the human race. The freshness in the songs is also created by the variety of musical styles that the different musicians bring in. Simple acoustic guitar or piano supported songs ("Effortlessly"; "Love & Understanding"; "Cloudz") mix with fully orchestrated pieces ("Incoming"; "Just one man"), world music ("Sharpening the Sword") and modern pop ("New New World"). "Making music is easy" he writes in the liner notes and he shows us in the effortless mastering of various musical styles and influences in this outstanding collection of songs held together by his voice and spirit.

Excellent album Jon, many thanks for your great music.

Born John Roy Anderson on October 25, 1944, in Lancashire, England, Jon Anderson would grow up to become one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock. He began his musical career by joining his brother Tony's group the Warriors. Eventually, that band relocated from England to Germany, but Tony had left the group by then. So, the only Anderson still in the band by 1965 when they cut their first single was Jon (technically still John at that time). The single received a less than enthusiastic...
