Customer Reviews

Quite possibly the best live recording ever. As mentioned before, the mix is rough but that does not for one second take away from the power and tightness of the band and of the hardest working man in show biz himself. The mix might actually lend a more authentic feel to the album, as if one were sitting at the Olympia Theatre. Clyde Stubblefield is a force of nature on this album, keeping the tightest rhythm section that I've ever heard in check and giving the performance of a lifetime. I've never heard anything like it and each time I listen to it, it sounds fresher. If there would be only one James Brown album to get, it would be this one.

Funk Rock/Soul Landmark

The energy of this Paris concert remains unreal...James and his posse were UNSTOPPABLE at this point. The ferocity and ruthlessness of their sound is unmatched by any soul/r&b/funk ensemble before or since. James lays the passion on thick for slow burners such as an AMAZING Georgia on My Mind, Try Me and It's a Man's Man's World (the esctatic band intro on the latter is both chilling and awesome) as much as the badass funk rock the young JB's bash out during Super Bad, Brother Rapp, Soul Power and Ain't it Funky Now...which more than outperform their already excellent studio versions. Catfish's guitar solos boom out, the horns roar and stab, Bootsy maps the groove, and Jabo Starks gives his snare a funky beating as James and Bobby Byrd viciously drive the frenzied crowd to the edge of insanity. James made great music since but he's never sounded as devastating, unhinged and dripping with molten out of control soul as he sounded in Paris!

Let The Groove Free Your Mind

As stinky as it gets, tour de force for Bootsy and Catfish. Not the best mix, but no doubt-the funkiest band in the history of De Fonk.

"Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" -- those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other African-American musicians were so influential over the course of popular music. And no other musician, pop or otherwise, put on a more exciting, exhilarating stage show: Brown's performances were marvels...
