iTunes Review

Family tragedy and the healing promise of God provide the backdrop for Steven Curtis Chapman’s life-affirming counterpoint to 2009’s more somber Beauty Will Rise. A sense of renewed hope and transcendence can be heard in both the optimistic tenor of the lyrics and the bright, acoustic-based sound of the tracks. Chapman’s vocals have kept their youthful vivacity even as his perspective as a songwriter has matured. The combination of strength, tenderness, and wisdom heard in tunes like “SEE You in a Little While” (written for his late grandmother) and “Michael and Maria” (honoring the memory of a family friend) reflect life’s hard lessons as well as an abiding faith. The sweet, baroque-tinged “Only One and Only You” and the warm piano ballad “Together” capture a sunny tone as they offer loving portraits of Chapman’s daughter Shaoey and wife, Mary Beth. From the jaunty clap-along beat of “Take Another Step” to the boisterous pop feel of “Love Take Me Over” and the rootsy folk-hymn quality of “Feet of Jesus,” SCC keeps The Glorious Unfolding musically interesting and reaffirming.

Love Take Me Over

Love this song!!! Adding it to my running playlist!

The Glory Is Unfolding

This Beautifully hopeful and encouraging new album from Steven Curtis Chapman is nothing less than glorious. Along with the catchy and upbeat lead single “Love Take Me Over”, songs like “something Beautiful” are sure to be loved by any SCC fan. Dr. Chapman has perfectly managed to maintain a sound that is both fresh and fitting with the sound his longtime fans (like me) love. The album contains many touching songs like “Michael and Maria” and “See You In A Little While” which emotionally convey Chapman’s trust in the promise of heaven. “Together” which Chapman wrote for his wife and “Only One and Only You” which he wrote for his daughter Shoey are sweet yet powerful orchestrated, piano led declarations of Stevens love for his family. You are bound to adore “Finish What He Started” and “A Little more Time to Love” by time you hear the first few words of their first verses. These songs among others prove that SCC has still got it and is still able to create amazing music with a relevant sound after 26+ years in the industry. The amazing Last track “Feet of Jesus” is one of my favorites; it begins in an almost haunting and eerie mood accompanied by the warmth of a picked guitar that is later joined by the sounds of an electric guitar, cello and pennywhistle as the song resolves in hopeful chorus. My other early favorites are “love Take Me Over” and the title track, which I absolutely love and is my current favorite from this record. With both touching acoustic songs and upbeat percussive anthems this album possess an eternal perspective and enduring hope that reminds us that God isn’t finished and that the Glorious unfolding is only just beginning.
