iTunes Review

More than just a collection of catchy, faith-based tunes, Jason Gray’s Love Will Have the Final Word is a song cycle of unusual honesty and spiritual perceptiveness. While the Minneapolis-rooted singer/songwriter has won praise for his sensitive lyrics and engaging melodies, he kicks things up another notch here. Avoiding feel-good clichés, Gray addresses the moments of weakness and sorrow that afflict everyone, believers included. The album opens on a buoyant note with “Laugh Out Loud,” a celebratory tune driven by handclaps and embellished with hammered dulcimer. “Love’s Not Done with You” and the title number continue in a hopeful vein, with widescreen arrangements that build to soaring choruses. What sets this album apart, though, are tracks like “Not Right Now” and “I Don’t Know How,” which address suffering with a frankness unusual in Christian pop/rock. Gray passes through the Valley of the Shadow to reach the Light with a joyful heart on “The Best Days of My Life” and “As I Am.”

Truth hurts so good

A beautiful collection of tunes, clearly written from the deep heart of experience. Something in a listener just knows when they're hearing truth. It hurts, but it heals.
This album feels like that kind of truth to me.

Gourmet lyrical phrasing filled with truth

Love Will Have the Final Word is an emotional listening experience. All eleven songs are catchy, personal and biblically focused. If you liked A Way to See in the Dark then you absolutely must have this album. With each album, I hear maturation in the subject matter with lyrical depth and musical layers that have made Jason among my favorite male artists, along with Bebo Norman, Shaun Groves and Josh Wilson.

If you like a singer-songwriter who lays their heart on their sleeve and sings about the truth of what it means to walk with God and work out their salvation with fear and trembling, then don't miss out on one of Christian music's most treasured artists. I get welled up singing along with several of the emotion-laden songs, especially "Not Right Now," "Love will Have the final Word," "Begin Again," "I Don't Know How" and "If You Want to Love Someone." If you are looking for the top male singer-songwriter album of the year, look no further than this stellar offering.

Deep, Beautiful, Insightful

Jason Gray speaks to hurting people on this album. It is an honest message of struggle, faith, and hope. You'll find the joy of grace, hope in sorrow, motivation for love, and the incredible peace of knowing that "He loves me as I am, not as I should be". Catchy tunes and life-changing lyrics.

Years Active:

Midwestern singer/songwriter Jason Gray bridges the gap between inward-thinking contemporary folk and hook-minded pop, adding his own spiritual perspective to the mix. Growing up in Minneapolis, music played a prominent role in his early years, be it listening to artists from Simon & Garfunkel to U2, or traveling with his musician mother and the band. In the early ‘80s, Gray’s parents split and his mother became a Christian, moving from rock clubs to the revival circuit. This proved to be a family...
