iTunes Review

Loveless is an album that grows in legend with each successive year. The group has never released a follow-up album. But the stories of Kevin Shields’ perfectionism are heartbreaking. Yes, Loveless is a full-out assault on the senses and massive amounts of ink and cyber-ink have been spilled over the album’s intricate greatness. It is a difficult album to initially penetrate. A cursory listen does not yield the insights necessary to understand what is happening here. The first key is arguably “When You Sleep” where the dense wall of sound liquefies just enough to hear the organ and vocals and to catch the wave of deep psychedelia present here. Shields’ and Bilinda Butcher’s vocals melt together as the swerving intensity of “I Only Said” careens like a racecar around curves sharper than anticipated while “Come In Alone” is blacklight love at its most alluring. This was an album that took two intense years and $500,000 to finish, money the label did not recoup and that it could not afford. There are no easy answers, but headphones, a lava lamp and a dark room help bring the blueprints of this legendary album into focus.

Customer Reviews

Great, but people, please buy the record.

This album is 1,000 times better than anything else. It sounds 1,000 times better than that on vinyl. Thats like, 5 billion times better than anything else. I rule at math.

downside

the only downside to this album is once you listen to it, nothing else ever seems as good.

A Musical Masterpiece

Wow only three reviews, well anyone that really loves this album knows they could easily write a ten page paper solely describing the emotions invoked by this album, but I think this Camus quote pretty much sums it up, "Truly fertile music, the only kind that will move us, that we shall truly appreciate, will be a music conducive to dream, which banishes all reason and analysis. One must not wish first to understand and then to feel. Art does not tolerate reason."

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Dublin, Ireland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and the Jesus and Mary Chain before them, My Bloody Valentine redefined what noise meant within the context of pop songwriting. Led by guitarist Kevin Shields, the group released several EPs in the mid-'80s before recording the era-defining Isn't Anything in 1988, a record that merged lilting, ethereal melodies of the Cocteau Twins with crushingly loud, shimmering distortion. Though My Bloody Valentine rejected rock & roll conventions, they didn't subscribe...
