iTunes Review

Sometimes heralded as a "new Dylan," Conor Oberst might just as well be proclaimed the new Gordon Gano or Loudon Wainwright III, but those names wouldn't make for headlines of the same size. At any rate, Lifted - 2002's installment in his Bright Eyes' collective's burgeoning discography - is another testament from a pissed-off singer-songwriter who, unafraid to look uncool, ends up looking pretty cool in the end. "It's cool if you keep quiet, but I prefer singing," he all but yells on the opening "Big Picture." That's certainly true as he holds forth on another dozen songs that happily, passionately conflate the political and the personal. Fans will debate what the best Bright Eyes album is, but Lifted is the sort of achievement few can argue against.

Customer Reviews

Simply incredible.

Wow. This album is incredible. As the first Bright Eyes album I ever bought, I feel a connection to it, as I do for many other of my "firsts". Conor Oberst takes the blank canvas that is today's music and fills it with introspective lyrics and deep metaphors such as "You say I treat you like a book on a shelf/ I don't take you out to often 'cause I know that I've completed you/ and that's why you stay here" (You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will.) As a musician myself I can say that the simplicity of the music at some times does not take away from the song as a whole, but adds to the lyrical vibe. I have owned this album for years and I'm still not bored with it. I highly reccomend it to fans of any genre.

The Best

This cd is the greatest I have heard in a long time. The sound is amazing, and the lyrics are deep. It will give you a new outlook on life and make you think about many different sensitive subjects. I recommend this cd and band to anyone who wants to find a new style of music, and hear some amazing lyrics.

One of the best albums my Bright Eyes,Every song is puzzle you want to solve,i think this album will go down one of the best albums ever!

Although many musicians have joined the band's rotating lineup, Bright Eyes is primarily the songwriting vehicle of Conor Oberst, a quivery-voiced Nebraska native who first attracted attention in 1994 -- when he was only 14 years old -- as the singer and guitarist for Commander Venus. Oberst proved to be a prolific musician, joining multiple bands (including Commander Venus, the Magentas, Park Ave., and Desaparecidos) while also co-founding Saddle Creek, an influential label that helped broadcast...
