iTunes Review

Looking back, Teena Maria seems like the living link between the introspective singer/songwriters of the ‘70s and the hip-hop queens of the ‘90s. Her output for the Epic label was particularly ahead of its time, veering from sassy funk (“Fix It”) to tormented torch balladry (“Casanova Brown”) and gossamer soul (“Stop the World,” “Just Us Two”) with distinctive intelligence and taste. Lovergirl: The Teena Marie Story gathers the highlights of this fruitful period in Marie’s career in one succinct package. Obvious hits like the pop crossover smash “Lovergirl” are paired with hard-to-find dance remixes to give a well-rounded picture of what Lady T was up to in her heyday. Dipping back into these tunes is a revelation — “Shadow Boxing,” for instance, anticipates any number of acoustic-groove excursions heard on the airwaves in the ‘00s. Much like Prince, Marie managed to keep within the mainstream during the ‘80s while challenging expectations of what an R&B/pop artist could accomplish. Lovergirl more than makes the case for why this artist’s legacy remains so vital and enduring.

I Agree

Teena does have and still has one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard. I'm 23 and grew up on her music. I got a chance to see her live in concert in 2007 and she is still amazing. Wish she would tour more cause I would love to see her again. All of her music is timeless.

Don't sleep on her

Teena has one of the most soulful voices that I have ever heard. I grew up on her music and I'm glad that she is still around. Don't sleep on my girl.

The girl can sang!

You'll never be forgotten Teena Marie.

This Album has the majority of the jams I remember listening to on late night radio when I was young. Back in the days when we recorded from the radio using cassette tapes on a boom-box:)

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
