Album Review

With her slinky, alluring stage presence and her wink-in-the-eye purr of a voice, Eartha Kitt was a one-of-a-kind artist and act in the 1950s, an icon who, had she been a young star when the era hit in the '80s, would have made the song video her own: she instinctively understood that the visual and the song go hand in hand in the modern pop world. This two-disc, 40-track set collects the best of her recordings for RCA Victor between 1952 and 1957, including 1952’s sultry “Monotonous,” 1953’s “Santa Baby,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” and “I Want to Be Evil,” the haunting “The Day the Circus Left Town,” and the weary, resigned “Dinner for One Please, James” both from 1955, and 1957's “St. Louis Blues,” drawn from the motion picture of the same name that hit movie screens in 1958. Kitt went on to more movie, stage, club, and television work, but the heart of her recorded legacy as a singer is collected here.

A 20th Century Treasure

Miss Eartha Kitt sang songs with witt and humor that played upon her sex kitten reputation. However she was an incredibly well read, educated, opinionated woman who off stage was an intellectual.
Her voice from beginning to end was remarbkable, unique, and enchanting. She purred and growled and rolled her r's and trilled her t's and did not sound like the dirt poor "high yellow" girl from the rural Southern US. She could sing in several languages fluently. Orson Welles described her as the most alluring woman in the world.
I had the priveledge to see Miss Kitt perform in 1994 after my aunt had seen her on Broadway in 1952. Over forty years performing and she was timeless and had the audience enthralled.
It is hard to pick a best Eartha Kitt song without delving into the comic songs she sang and for which she is known. These songs show the unique characteristics of her voice. But the best songs are the deeper album cuts. This collection has more songs than most collections and gives you a chance to hear more of her emotional range.
But, for cat owners, beware, when Eartha purrs and growls, your cats will recognize one of their own and sit up and listen in fear of the lioness they hear.

I love this song, she sings it better than any other! 👏😁

Eartha Kitt epitomized the idea of the sex-kitten chanteuse, rising to fame with a nightclub act centered on her slinky stage presence and her throaty purr of a voice. As much as she enjoyed vamping it up, she also projected the image of an exotic international sophisticate, especially since she sang in several different languages. She brought a definite zest to her torch songs, and favored lyrics that painted her as the Material Girl of her time. Kitt's persona was so vivid and well-developed that...
