iTunes Review

Rich vocals, catchy hooks, and spellbinding beats from the "Say It" star. Lanez launched his career by flooding fans with free tracks, so it’s a pleasant surprise that his first studio album feels, somehow, more polished and more raw. An explosive intro-rant from a foster parent fades into songs about flirting and fame, and don’t miss “Luv,” an Auto-Tuned twist on Tanto Metro’s dancehall classic, “Everyone Falls in Love.”

I Told You ... An Indication of a Bright Future

Those familiar with Tory's catalog will not be surprised by the quality of this album. With the amount of (free) quality music he has dropped over the years, you could argue that some of those tracks could have easily made the album. Incredible production, and Tory matches each track with his versatility. A cohesive album with skits to tie everything together. In fact, the album itself almost feels like a movie with its presentation--similar to that of Kendrick Lamar's GKMC.

My only real gripe with the album is that many of the tracks contain similar elements to many other hip-hop artists, which takes away from the individuality of the album. Moving forward, Tory needs to continue on crafting his own sound to avoid being stuck in the shadow of other artists. That being said, I was extremely impressed with the album, as it met and even exceeded some of my expectations.

Overall, a hip-hop album with pop appeal. Tory shows his prowess for making hit records while also staying true to edgy, hard-hitting, and braggadocious raps. Whether its pop, rap, r&b or any mixture of the three, new and old fans alike will find something here to enjoy.
