Made In Hong Kong (And They Should've Put Some Older Songs On Here)

My opinion of this EP is mixed. On the plus side, it's Nightwish. With Nightwish, you can't go wrong. On the minus side, however, this set could have been a lot better. First and foremost, they should have put some older songs on here. Anette has some kick-a*s renditions of "Dark Chest of Wonders", "Nemo", "Wishmaster", etc. With the exception of "Last of the Wilds", the band played every one of these live songs at the concert I went to, and do not be mistaken: No recording will EVER capture the power of Nightwish live and right in front of you, period. "While Your Lips Are Still Red" and "Escapist" are both excellent tracks. If you don't already have them, you should get them. However, they're already on another iTunes release. The demo of "Cadence of Her Last Breath" is the only new material here. The bottom line? If there were recordings of some of the older songs on here, I would not hesitate to buy this EP. However, with only Dark Passion Play songs (all but one of which I have seen performed live in concert) present, two B-sides that have already been released, and the only new material being a demo of another song on DPP, I find it difficult to recommend a purchase.

What Happened?

I saw Nightwish twice last year and the concerts were amazing. But this CD doesn't even come close to how great this band sounded. The recording and sound is awful and while I'm at it, why not include some of the older songs like they did during the concerts? Too bad for those who didn't get the chance to see them live because this release doesn't do the band, the tour or the fans justice.

Made in Hong Kong

First, I think that it's neccessary for me to say that I am extremely impressed with iTunes for getting this album on the exact same day as the US release. My opinion of iTunes hasn't always been a good one, but when I discovered this album I changed my opinion. About the album: It's good, but there were a few letdowns. 1. The quality isn't all that good. 2. As I (and many diehard Nightwish fans who stuck with the band through the Tarja Turunen firing) were disappointed to discover, there was not one cover of an old Nightwish song. 3. I was really hoping to hear Escapist and While Your Lips Are Still Red live, but they are just the recordings. 4. The only new material was the Cadence of Her Last Breath demo, sung by Marco. It really is a great album, these were just some minor things that I found wrong with it. I love to hear Anette singing "her era" songs that suit her voice perfectly.

Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish were formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. Nightwish's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish...
