Album Review

31 Banjo Favorites, Vol. 2 compiles 22 instrumentals from the album King of the Smokey Mountain Players, plus nine songs from two other CDs, 16 All-Time Favorites and Mama Likes Bluegrass Music. Recorded in the late '60s and mid-'70s, these recordings demonstrate why Fairchild is sometimes called "the King of the Five-String Banjo": his playing is inventive, exciting, and often humorous ("Kicking Mule" is a hoot). With only a fiddle, bass, and acoustic guitar for accompaniment, Fairchild expertly tackles a host of traditional and old-timey tunes. Brimming with energy and fun, 31 Banjo Favorites, Vol. 2 is the perfect soundtrack for your next barn dance.
