EDITORS’ NOTES

New Orleans–raised trumpeter Terence Blanchard has secured a reputation for his film-scoring work over the last two decades, but for Magnetic he heads back to his jazz roots with 10 original compositions. Peppered by guest appearances from legendary bassist Ron Carter and a fellow Blue Note Records artist—saxophonist Ravi Coltrane—Blanchard showcases his range, easing from the subtle lament of "Jacob's Ladder" to the peppy and angular "Don't Run." The album is capped by the fiery "Time to Spare," which interweaves Blanchard's bop-based horn attack with Fabian Almazan's elegant piano work.
