Customer Reviews

When one spends a lifetime in music, giving of yourself fully and completely for your art, you make many close friends along the way. Friendships born out of the late nights, plying your craft for no other reason than to touch each other and the audience.

When Tony Barca woke up, in a spiritual sense, one morning he gazed around and saw the sum total of a life's work. There beside him was his beautiful wife and companion and sleeping (hopefully) in the next room, his newborn daughter. Around him were the many memories of the years perfecting his craft, a testimony to the level to which he had risen in the street-tough New York music scene.

Makana...a gift, a prize, a present.

From the certainty and center of "Fatherhood" to the resolute acceptance of "Bye-Bye Baby" this recording is about looking hard at yourself in the mirror...and accepting the face which stares at you in return. It seems that for each question which a song may ask, there is always an answer. From the playfulness of "I'm Gonna Love You" to the heart-wrenching reality check of "Already Over You"; the innocent yearning of "The Way That We Dance" to the solidarity of the magnificent duet "Baby I Love You"; the power behind "I'm Tempted" to the hopelessness of "Tried and Convicted", this is an album of choices and chances .

And a little fun is allowed along the way. In fact, a lot of fun. Tony has said many times that the essence of these recordings were spontaneously captured in the studio, live and unembellished. Horn players, hearing the songs for the first time, just knew exactly what to play and how to play it. Singers who had only heard the solo versions of his work, knew just what Tony wanted. Songs which began in his mind as shuffles before getting on the subway, turned into half-time funk and blues by the time the train arrived at the studio.

Check out the zydeco beat of "I'm Gonna Love You"; the straight ahead rock power of "My Baby's Gone Hollywood"; the lonely, haunting slide guitars of "Highway Rider"; the powerful backup vocals and horns during "Sweet Talkin" and "Bye Bye Baby". Each style of music fits like a glove, from Rock and Roll to R&B, funk or soul. So here is to life, to the friends we make along the way, the loves we shared and lost, the majesty of a new life which breathes in each of us, if we are brave enough to see what it looks like.

Thanks for Makana, the gift.
