Editors’ Notes

The Vancouver trio Hey Ocean! describes its music as “classic pop,” which is pretty apt. It’s not so much that the band takes a retro approach to crafting pop music; rather, the songs on its 2013 album Is sound inspired by classical music. “If I Were a Ship” opens with flawless vocal harmonies orbiting around frontwoman Ashleigh Ball’s playful voice. The song’s changes feel more like studied movements punctuated by a layered orchestration of sounds. Conversely, “Make a New Dance Up” moves with quirkier parts and peppy melodies to create something that recalls the cosmopolitan pop sophistication of an Ivy recording. The pedaling rhythms and neon keyboard hooks give “Big Blue Wave” a danceable feel, as Ball’s bandmates David Vertesi and David Beckingham craft a well-tailored backdrop that plays as if melody were the band’s first language. Ball lets one of her male bandmates take the mic in the post-punk tinged “Jolene,” which shifts gears smoothly before “New Love” refines power-pop hooks into a lush backdrop of barbed song hooks softened by soaring harmonies.

Hey Ocean is Simply Amazing

There aren't even words to describe how happy Hey Ocean Makes me. Their music is so meaningful and inspires so much in me. Listening to their songs always makes me feel better. They're so unique and I would do anything to be able to see them live! Is is an amazing album that everyone should have in their music library. Every song tells a story, and inspires true, deep emotions. The song Steady has actually brought me to tears. If I Were A Ship gives me shivers (along with pretty much any other song by them!) So, Dave, Ashleigh, and Dave- if you guys are reading this-keep doing what you're doing, because you make my life so much better! <3

a lovely pop album with wide appeal

you know, i COULD say that the title says it all, because it is not inaccurate, but it would not nearly cover the variety of positive things i have to say about this album ever since i downloaded it from their website last july. hey ocean is such a unique, talented band. i don't like "mainstream" pop music but i would consider this a pop album because of the sheer joy bursting through most of the songs. these are songs that you will want to get up and dance to that aren't about getting drunk and having sex: they are about love, and in some cases, the deterioration of love. when i first bought this album i had it on repeat for WEEKS, i couldn't get enough of it. i told everyone i knew, you HAVE to know this band, theyre so good! no matter a person's taste in music, i think that they can find something to appreciate in hey ocean's music, be it in this or one of their older albums (both superb as well). this collection of my thoughts probably isnt as well laid out as i'd like it to be, but it comes down to this: three musicians with talent both vocally and on their respective instruments have crafted a great album. you won't be disappointed in what ashleigh, dave, and dave have made. i HIGHLY recommend giving this album (and their other albums!) a listen. you'll soon be hooked on hey ocean too

Never hear of them.

But they're awesome! Great musicianship. They use some pretty random stuff that makes it so unique and at the same time poppy. They should be on the radio.
